Acceleration of Mountain Glacier Melt Could Impact Pacific Northwest Water Supplies

In a new study, scientists used computer modeling to estimate the flow of mountain glacial melt in six river basins in the Pacific Northwest. They estimated glacier mass loss and meltwater volume from 1960 to the present, and predicted future changes through 2099.

Scientists found that river basins fed by runoff from lower elevation glaciers in the Cascades will have less water available during the dry season over the coming decades, because the glaciers are melting faster than usual due to warming air temperatures.  The changes could affect water resources in the Pacific Northwest region.
