Projected Changes in Persistent Extreme Summer Weather Events: The Role of Quasi-Resonant Amplification

Warming in the Arctic is changing how the jet stream functions, and as a result, weather is getting more extreme, as the world witnessed in 2018. An international group of researchers found that increased warming caused by increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has constrained the action of jet stream winds which has increased the frequency of heat waves that last for longer periods, leading to droughts and wildfires. The disturbance has also brought intense flooding to places like Japan and the United States. Unfortunately, current climate models don’t account for the perturbations in flow. But all signs point to such extreme events becoming more commonplace.
